• a study on the anisotropic behavior of slate using a modified rock strength criterion: a case study from west basin of iran

     in this paper, an attempt is made to describe the behavior of anisotropic slate by using a new modified rock failure criterion under uniaxial and triaxial tests. a database of three individual slates g, s and z from three different dam sites of iran was used to validate the new modified criterion for anisotropic rocks. the failure envelopes by fitting the modified criterion are compared to the well-known modified hoek-brown and ramamurthy criteria for anisotropic rocks. it was observed that the new modified criterion passes through the triaxial data more accurately than the other criteria. root mean squares errors of fitting the new modified criterion are very low and offer high correlation more than 0.98. the modification of the new criterion to be applicable for anisotropic rocks is carried out by introducing a parameter α in the original rock strength criterion, which was defined for intact isotropic rocks. the variation of this parameter with anisotropy orientation showed that it could be taken into account for representation of the strength anisotropy effect for the anisotropic rocks.
