a comparison of the roll of window size and glazing type in different building orientations to reduce energy consumption

artificial lighting is the second major consumer of electricity in commercial buildings and accounts for 20-30 percent of electricity consumption. in this research, the role of daylighting on reducing energy consumption was investigated, and the effect of window size and glazing type on the provision of building lighting and reducing the use of artificial light was analyzed.

the different scenarios were as follows: reducing window-to-wall ratio from 20% (of the baseline model) to 30%, increasing this ratio to 40% and changing glazing type from a double glazed to a low-e one. a 5*5 m2 office in four main orientations, was simulated by designbuilder simulation program. results indicated that in the south orientation, changing the size of window achieved a higher amount of energy savings, which was 69.92 kwh in a year.

in other orientations meaning north, east, and west, changing the glazing type to a low-e one led to better reduction in energy consumption which ultimately caused 65.61 kwh, 66.53 kwh, and 67.93 kwh energy savings respectively. although this kind of glazing led to a small amount of lighting energy saving, its performance was more advanced in the context of cooling energy and total energy savings.
